Riding for almost 50 years, and involved in motorcycle training since 1974, Bryan Lowes developed the British Columbia Safety Council’s original motorcycle licensing program, launched in 1975. He also developed the Experienced Rider Course in 1978, originally for the Canadian Forces in Comox, Esquimalt and Chilliwack and then offered to the public as well. In the 1980’s Bryan helped develop a special training program for new RCMP motor officers, with this program being delivered to all Canadian RCMP Motorcycle officers for over a decade. The programs he helped develop have trained over 45,000 novice, experienced, and police students. There are very few people involved in rider traiing today with this kind of in-depth background.
Bryan’s current bike is a Honda VFR, but he has experience with literally hundreds of different motorcycles, both on and off-road, from mopeds to touring models. “We need to monitor our own performance on the bike, and constantly try to improve if we want to stay sharp.”
Steve McKenna relies on motorcycles as his year round transportation and does not own a car. Riding since 1993 he has owned just about every style of street bike available.
Trained as an instructor at the BC Safety Council he is an avid learner when it comes to riding. “I’m a student of motorcycling just like our customers. I’m just a little further along the path.” Steve has taken many riding courses including Police Motor Officer training and continues to take at least one riding course a year to improve his skills. “My life and my wife’s life depend on my skills. I take that responsibility very seriously, so I train to be the best rider I can be”
Steve has won several “Top Gun” awards at the Gold Wing Road Riders (GWRRA) annual WingDing motorcycle rallies. CLICK HERE for clips from riding competitions.
Graham Street has been riding motorcycles since the age of 5, and has been instructing since 2003. At the BC Safety Council, he taught novice rider, traffic and experienced rider programs. Graham is a graduate of Police Motor Officer training, and is an ICBC licensed instructor trainer.
Having owned many motorcycles including dirt bikes, classics, standards, cruisers, adventure touring bikes and sport bikes over the years, adapting to the different styles of bike at RoadCraft is easy for Graham.
“Teaching is my passion. Watching a student learn and change and have those “Aha!” moments is what I thrive on. If my students have HALF as much fun learning as I will teaching them, they are in for an excellent time in my class.”
Gilbert Brennenstuhl developed his love of motorcycling when he received his first training on motorcycles and sidecars as a teenager. However, he did very little riding while his children were growing up. Getting back to riding, he took the BC Safety Council novice training program, followed by their experienced rider course, and has since taken Police Motor Officer training. From 2003 to 2009 Gilbert was with the BC Safety Council teaching the novice program and the traffic course. He also worked on numerous experienced rider courses. Gilbert enjoys riding 12 months of the year weather (snow/ice) permitting and when he grows up he wants to get back into riding motorcycles with sidecars. UPDATE! A sidecar has now been added to the stable!
John Ethier has 35+ years of riding experience and has been training riders for many years. Although he’s ridden many styles of motorcycle, he’s been a loyal Honda owner for years, from a 250cc beginner ride now to his Goldwing 1800. John has travelled extensively on his motorcycle all over Canada and the US, also in Europe and Australia. John says, “Motorcycling requires riders to be “in the moment” at all times. Riders should all strive to improve their skills through training, coaching and perhaps most importantly – regular skills practice.” And, to take his own advice, John takes riding courses to keep current.
